The issue of whether or not to allow building on the Ingleborough Road Memorial Playing Field in Birkenhead has attracted nationwide news coverage and aroused much local sentiment both for and against.

The playing field used to be the school field of the old Birkenhead Institute school that closed in 1995. 88 old boys from the school - including famous poet Wilfred Owen - were killed in action during the First World War and the sports pavilion was built in 1926 as a memorial, paid for by a public appeal.

88 trees were also planted - one for each of the old boys killed.

This collection of contemporary poetry brings together some of the voices against the development of the playing fields and helps underline some of the strong and emotive arguments involved.

Synopsis:
In this, her first book, Joan Shaw - now in her 80s - remembers back to her youth and pays tribute to her aunt, Amy Blackburn, who in the 1930s became one of the early pioneers of cosmetic products for the retail market.  Ably assisted by Joan's mother Nelly, Amy invented her own face creams, developed her own techniques and boldly set out to bring make-up to the masses by opening the first beauty bars in the major department stores, including Selfridges in London.

It could be that Amy was the original inventor of the makeover.  See for yourself as we retrace her progress from "Blackpool to Bond Street!"

The game of Knur and Spell has a history going back many hundreds of years - possibly even back to the time of the Viking invasions. It had its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s as thousands of people from the East Lancashire / West Yorkshire border town flocked to cheer on - and bet on - the big name players of the day.

After the second world war, the game died a death in Lancashire but was revived in the late 1950s by a handful of diehard enthusiasts.  This led to a resurgence of the ancient game which, in turn, brought with it corporate sponsorship, world championships, TV coverage, "Fiery Fred" Trueman and a whole lot more.

This is the story of the post-war rise and demise of knour and spell in Lancashire, told through the eyes and reflections of twice world champion Stuart Greenfield - one of the "Colne Giants".

For much of the DDR period, Erfurt was probably thought of as a footballing backwater, constantly overshadowed by neighbours and perennial better achievers Carl Zeiss Jena. In fact, many people outside the eastern part of Germany may not even be sure of where Erfurt actually is.

However, in the early days of the fledgling DDR, Erfurt had one of the top football teams in the country and, in the early 1950s, became the first side to win consecutive league titles.

Now - for the first time in an English language book - you can follow the fascinating story of the Erfurt club from its origins in the 1890s, through its golden age in the communist cold war period and right up to dastde as it struggles to stay afloat in the big money leagues of the reunified Germany.
To the best of our knowledge, this is the only English language book in existence about the history of FC Rot Weiss Erfurt!
